    When to choose PNG

    PNG suits logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything with text or flat colors: edges stay sharp, without JPG artifacts. It is also the format to use when an image needs a transparent area.

    For a photo, PNG produces a very heavy file: prefer JPG or WebP.

    What the conversion does

    Converting a JPG to PNG does not make the image sharper: details lost during JPG compression do not come back. The benefit is elsewhere: no more loss with each save, and a format every piece of software accepts.

    Frequently asked questions

    Will my PNG be heavier than the original?

    Almost always, especially from a JPG or WebP. PNG loses nothing but does not compress as much. The size before and after is shown.

    Do animated GIFs stay animated?

    No. Only the first frame becomes a PNG.

    Can I convert iPhone photos (HEIC)?

    Yes. Browsers cannot always read HEIC: these files are then sent to our server, with a warning, and deleted automatically.

    Is location information removed?

    Yes. Metadata (EXIF, GPS) is not copied into the PNG.
