Instagram image sizes
| Format | Aspect ratio | Size in pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 |
| Portrait post | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 |
| Landscape post | 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 |
| Story or Reel cover | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 |
Instagram crops posts to an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5. If your photo is taller or wider than that, use Crop image first to choose exactly what stays in the frame.
Why resize before posting
Instagram scales every photo down to 1080 px wide and compresses it again. Uploading a photo that is already the right size and saved at high quality avoids an extra round of resizing, uploads faster on mobile data, and gives you control over sharpness.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Instagram post be?
1080 px wide. The height depends on the format: 1080 px for a square, 1350 px for a portrait (4:5), 566 px for a landscape (1.91:1).
What size is an Instagram story?
1080 × 1920 px, a 9:16 vertical format.
Will my photo be stretched?
No. "Keep aspect ratio" is ticked, so only the width is set and the height follows. Crop first if you need an exact ratio.
Can I resize several photos at once?
Yes, up to 30, with a combined ZIP download.
